All-alloy block and head, chain-driven DOHC 16-valve. The crank 'sits up inside the block and is held in place and braced at the same time, with an aluminium girdle'. RWD Motorsport puts the engine at roughly 30 kg less than a Zetec E. Standard connecting rods are described as marginal for sustained high output: Burton recommends 'Forged Accralite pistons and H-section Farndon steel rods' at around 200 bhp, which is exactly the output level of both documented Escort installations.

Two competing architectures are commercially documented. (a) Crossmember mounting: Burton FP288 for the standard crossmember, with the explicit condition that the 'crossmember must be modified to lower the rack mounting brackets', and Burton MP173 for a lowered-rack World Cup type crossmember (their own MP178). (b) Chassis-leg mounting: GRP4 Fabrications GRP5130D carries the engine on brackets bolted to the chassis legs, which positions the engine 'as low and as far backward as possible' and additionally 'allows the Cross member and Steering Rack to be removed from the Car easily without having to support the Engine'. Both routes need a lowered steering rack. Burton warns that MP173 is designed for their MP178 crossmember and that other manufacturers' crossmembers may cause fitting or engine positioning problems, and that the 'block webbing on exhaust side sometimes has to be ground back'.

The Duratec's standard dual-mass flywheel is replaced in all supplier documents opened: RWD Motorsport describes it as 'incompatible with our bellhousings', and Brands Hatch Performance writes of the Type 9 bellhousing 'Not compatible with standard flywheel. Needs Ford Duratec lightweight Steel Flywheel'. For the clutch, RWD Motorsport names an 8.5-inch disc from the Ford Pinto; the AF14-KIT is optionally supplied with a lightweight flywheel including an 8.5-inch clutch, RS2000 release bearing and pilot bearing. (1Q) One publisher offers a one-piece driveshaft for the Escort Mk1/Mk2 as a replica of the Group 1 shaft: Burton PROPENG, flange to nose 1,293 mm, tube diameter 76 mm, suitable for the English or Atlas axle, GBP 214.00 (as of 25.07.2026) (1Q). NOTE: on the product page this shaft is specified for Rocket, Type 9 and T5 gearboxes, NOT measured for a Duratec installation. No opened source says whether the Duratec adapter bellhousing shifts the gearbox position and thus the required shaft length.

The engine's coolant outlets sit at the rear of the head, which is the wrong end for a longitudinal installation: they 'foul the bulkhead if you retain the original outlet housings'. The documented remedy is a water rail that relocates the outlet to the front of the engine (Burton FD480, 32 mm outlet on the exhaust side, supplied with ECT sender, gauge sensor, electric fan switch and bypass outlets); RWD Motorsport describes the same class of part in general terms, stating that their water manifold 'simplifies the cooling system when used in a longitudinal engine position'. The documented Mk2 build uses a 4-2-1 BTB manifold into a Longlife system, i.e. the same 4-2-1 architecture from a different maker.
The documented route is a standalone engine management system replacing the donor ECU entirely.
