4A-GE 20V in Toyota AE86.

Documented from 28 recorded sources: 3 of the ten mandatory blocks are carried by two independent publishers, 4 remain open, 1 does not apply. Internal confidence 66%.

Engine

Engine basics

1,587 cc, four cylinders, DOHC, five valves per cylinder (20 valves total), 81.0 x 77.0 mm bore and stroke, aluminium head, individual throttle bodies, VVT on the intake cam. The two variants split on compression and head: the Silvertop (AE101) runs 10.5:1 and is quoted at 160 PS at 7,400 rpm; the Blacktop (AE111) runs 11.0:1 and is quoted at 165 PS at 7,800 rpm with a lighter flywheel. On the heads the reachable technical accounts agree in direction: the Blacktop head flows better through larger ports, while the Silvertop has the more compact combustion chamber with more squish, which some builders rate as the better chamber. Torque is close on paper for both (about 16.5 kg-m, roughly 162 Nm), the Blacktop making its peak higher up. Against the AE86's factory 16V (130 PS) either 20V is a modest, high-revving increase rather than a big-torque jump - a point that matters when judging what the rest of the driveline and the brakes actually need.

Status: VERIFIED · Confidence 82%

Aspiration

Naturally aspirated in both cases, with individual throttle bodies (one per cylinder) and VVT on the intake camshaft - this is the defining feature of the 20V over the 16V. No forced induction is involved. The metering differs between the two: the Si

Recommended donor engine

Buy a complete 20V take-out and decide Silvertop or Blacktop before buying, because the two need different management. The Silvertop donor is an AE101 (Levin/Trueno, ~1991-1995); the Blacktop donor is an AE111 (~1995-2000). A complete lot for either should include the individual throttle bodies, the matching ECU, the engine loom, the igniter and coil, and the VVT and idle solenoids - the 16V ECU cannot be reused. One trap on the Blacktop donor: its factory six-speed gearbox (C-series) is a front-wheel-drive transaxle and is useless for the AE86, so the gearbox is not part of a useful donor package here. For the Silvertop, budget additionally for a sealed air-flow-meter induction box.

Donor parts recommendation

From the recipient car's point of view: keep the AE86's T50 gearbox, rear axle, propshaft and (for most builds) the standard AE86 clutch and flywheel; buy the 20V complete with its throttle bodies, matching ECU, engine loom, igniter and coil, and its VVT/idle solenoids. Decide Silvertop or Blacktop first, because it changes the induction (AFM box vs open trumpets) and the ECU. Budget for the three parts that this swap specifically needs and that are sold as a set for it: a distributor relocation kit (or a firewall cut), a throttle-linkage conversion for the AE86 cable, and an RWD coolant conversion. Do NOT plan on the Blacktop's six-speed - it is a FWD transaxle. Remember the pilot bearing (the FWD engine lacks one).

1 · Engine mounts

VERIFIED

This is the part of the swap that is genuinely easy, and two independent AE86-specific sources say the same thing. The 20V block is virtually identical to the 16V block, so it bolts into the AE86's existing engine mounts and the accessories fit; the FWD-to-RWD write-up puts it as taking the mounts and gearbox braces off the RWD 4A-C (or 16V) and putting them on the same spots on the 20V - a bolt-and-swap job. No custom mounts or crossmember work is reported as necessary for the engine itself. The fabrication on this swap is elsewhere (firewall for the distributor, coolant routing, exhaust flange), not in the mounts.

2 · Oil pan and steering

OPEN

No reliable combination-specific information found on oil pan, oil pickup and steering clearance for the 20V in the AE86.

3 · Manual gearbox

SINGLE_SOURCE
Gearbox

The AE86's own T50 five-speed is retained and the 20V bolts straight to it, exactly as the 16V does - the 20V bellhousing pattern is shared across the 4A-GE family. The 4A-GE flywheels that fit inside the T50 bellhousing are the 200 mm (AE86/AE82) and the 212 mm (AE92/AE101/AE111) units; the 224 mm 4AGZE flywheel does not fit. The one gearbox that does NOT transfer is the Blacktop's factory six-speed, which is a front-wheel-drive transaxle and cannot be used in the AE86. So the standard answer is: keep the T50.

Gearbox mount

Because the AE86's own T50 is kept, its standard gearbox mount and crossmember are retained; no change is documented for the 20V (1Q).

Status: SINGLE_SOURCE · Confidence 42%

Shifter and linkage

The T50 is the AE86's own gearbox, so its standard shifter and linkage are retained without change (1Q).

Status: SINGLE_SOURCE · Confidence 40%

Clutch

Two documented routes, and the choice is real rather than forced. Most builders keep it simple and run the standard AE86 200 mm flywheel with an AE86 clutch; this bolts to the 20V and works. The alternative is the Blacktop's own 212 mm flywheel, which is lighter and takes a larger 212 mm clutch from an AE92 GTS or AE101 - some builders prefer it for exactly that reason. The one step that is not optional on either route is the pilot/spigot bearing: the FWD 20V crank has none, so an AE86 16V pilot bearing must be fitted (it is confirmed to fit the 20V). Clutch friction parts as fine as an Avensis-based AP clutch have been used successfully. No source gave a torque-holding figure for the standard clutch behind the 20V.

5 · Driveshaft and differential

SINGLE_SOURCE
Driveshaft

With the T50 retained, the standard AE86 propshaft is kept unchanged; no driveshaft modification is reported for this swap (1Q).

Differential

Because the AE86's own T50 gearbox is retained (the 20V bolts to it directly), the rest of the driveline including the propshaft and the standard AE86 rear axle and differential carries over unchanged; no combination-specific differential change is documented as necessary (1Q). Given the modest power increase this is consistent, but nothing was found on final-drive ratios or on any torque-capacity concern for this combination.

6 · Fuel, cooling, charge air, exhaust

SUPPORTED
Fuel system

Documented in outline rather than in exact numbers. The 20V is fuel-injected through its individual throttle bodies, so the fuel feed and return have to be adapted to the throttle-body rail rather than to the 16V arrangement. On the pump, the community answer for a 20V AE86 is a Walbro 255 l/h in-tank pump (it fits a baffled AE86 tank) or a Bosch 044 inline; note that early carburettor AE86s have no in-tank pump at all, while the GT-S tank already has the pump mounting, so the tank you start with decides the work. The fuel-pump control runs through the EFI main relay and the circuit-opening relay (COR), which cuts the pump when the engine is not turning - a frequent source of no-run faults after a swap when the COR is missing or wrongly bridged. No reachable source gave a fuel-pressure figure or an injector flow rating for this combination.

Status: SUPPORTED · Confidence 62%

Cooling

The 20V does not cool like the 16V and this is real work, not a bolt-on. The coolant inlet/outlet on the 20V sit at the rear of the block, so the plumbing has to be re-routed to the AE86's front-mounted radiator, and the correct flow direction (pump into the head first, then block, then radiator) has to be preserved. An electric fan is required, because the FWD 20V never had a pulley-driven fan. That the coolant routing is a defined problem is confirmed independently by the existence of a dedicated product for it - an SQ 20V RWD coolant conversion kit sold specifically for this swap (483.00 USD, 25.07.2026). A related detail: fitting the AE86 accessory belts (A/C, alternator, power steering) is reported to need about 2 mm shaved off the AE86 crank pulley to line the belts up.

Intercooler and charge piping

Not applicable to this combination. In both versions the 4A-GE 20V is a naturally aspirated engine with individual throttle bodies; there is no forced induction and therefore no intercooler and no charge piping.

Exhaust

One engine-side finding and one chassis-side task. Engine side (transferred from a mid-engine MR2 guide, so read as engine geometry only): the 20V Silvertop can use a 16V exhaust manifold with only the outermost flange modified, whereas the Blacktop has larger exhaust ports and loses out with a 16V header, wanting a Blacktop-specific header. Chassis side, and AE86-specific: the header has to be fabricated (or adapted) at the flange that mates the exhaust ports, and two of the retainer bolt holes need to be moved, because the port positions carry over but the stud pattern does not line up cleanly. Nothing reachable specified the downpipe, catalyst position or the rest of the system in the AE86 - which is also where the German emissions question sits (see Legal field).

7 · Electrics, ECU, immobiliser

OPEN
Electrics and ECU

The wiring is the largest single job in this swap and it is well documented for the AE86. The 16V ECU cannot be reused: the 20V needs its own OEM ECU because the fuel maps, injector sizing and the four independent throttles are fundamentally different. The split between the two variants is on the metering: the Silvertop uses an air-flow meter (and therefore a sealed induction box), the Blacktop uses a MAP sensor and tolerates open throttle bodies - the AFM connector is explicitly Silvertop-only. The loom has to connect, at minimum, four injectors, the igniter/ignition module, the distributor, the throttle-position sensor, the ignition coil, the knock sensor, the idle-control solenoid, the VVT solenoid and the water-temperature sensor; the 16V's single-wire oxygen sensor gives way to a four-wire heated sensor. Two practical warnings recur: there are two non-interchangeable 5-pin igniter connector keyings, so the igniter and its plug must match; and the fuel-pump/ignition side depends on the circuit-opening relay and on the IGF ignition-confirmation signal reaching the ECU, the absence of which is a classic no-injection fault. The honest summary from the AE86-specific guide is that you need both the AE86 body-harness diagram and the 20V engine diagram side by side.

Immobiliser and instruments

9 · Known problems

SUPPORTED

Three recurring problems, all documented and none of them the engine itself. First and most physical: the distributor sits at the rear of the 20V head and fouls the AE86 firewall. The clean fix is to cut and re-seal the firewall (or fit a distributor-relocation kit, or go crank-angle-sensor-only with an aftermarket DLI); the failure mode, seen on a real build, is a firewall hacked open and covered with flammable material - a genuine fire/exhaust-fume hazard rather than a nuisance. Second: the wiring. This is the single most common no-run cause after the swap - a missing or wrongly bridged circuit-opening relay, or a missing IGF ignition-confirmation signal that stops the injectors firing, and looms whose wire gauge is too small. The AE86-specific guidance is blunt that you need both wiring diagrams open at once. Third, a variant-specific one: the Silvertop's air-flow meter needs a properly sealed induction box, and an unsealed one meters wrong. A related build note: the VVT wants high oil pressure, so the AE86's original oil-pressure block is often replaced with a positive-feed block and a larger oil cooler. No reachable source reported a swap that was abandoned outright.

Approval Feasibility

No reliable combination-specific information found on any actually completed German approval of a 20V installation in the AE86.

Status: OPEN

Legal / Approval (DE)

Germany, as of July 2026. No reachable German source was found on the actual approval of a 4A-GE 20V in the AE86 (the relevant forum thread was blocked); the following is the general framework. Starting position: the AE86 has the 4A-GE 16V from the factory; the 20V Silvertop (AE101, from about 1991) and the 20V Blacktop (AE111, from about 1995) are later engines of the same family and were never type-approved in this vehicle. First, the conversion as such: TUV SUD expressly names engine tuning as a modification requiring inspection and points out that a modification report under § 19 StVZO "may be required even" "where an ABE, EC marking or Teilegutachten exists"; if the conversion worsens emissions or noise behaviour or changes the vehicle category, the Betriebserlaubnis may lapse. The practical core is therefore the emissions classification: a Japanese 20V brings its own fuelling with it and must meet the emissions and noise limits applicable to the AE86 - that is the point at which this swap typically gets stuck in Germany, and it is precisely there that the blocked combination-specific source is missing. Second, the classic-vehicle route: the AE86 (built 1983 to 1987) is now more than 30 years old and therefore in principle eligible for an H-Kennzeichen under § 23 StVZO. Here, however, the report's ten-year rule applies: only "period conversions within ten years of first registration" are acceptable. For an AE86 first registered between 1983 and 1987 this window ends around 1993 to 1997 - the Silvertop (from 1991) can fall inside it for late vehicles, the Blacktop (from 1995) lies outside it for early AE86s. This calculation is traceable from the documented figures, but is drawn by no source for exactly this combination and therefore remains open here. Third, a point that distinguishes this swap from a supercharger conversion and works expressly in its favour: the German-language scene records that "turbo or supercharger are only permitted if the series vehicle in question also had one" - the 20V is naturally aspirated and therefore does not fall under this forced-induction restriction, unlike the 4A-GZE.

28 findings from 19 hosts, mapping to 19 publisher keys - no key collapses wrongly (the programmatic collision check found no mixed publishers). 20 findings are reachable, 8 are not. 16 findings are used in substance and cited in fields; they are spread across 12 publisher keys. 14 search runs; every finding used was opened and read. The record is carried by the central AE86 20V guide and the data sheet at club4ag.com (two pages, one publisher), four toymods threads (FWD to RWD installation, parts interchangeability, Silvertop/Blacktop, fuel pump), a European AE86 forum (aeu86.org) on flywheel and pilot bearing, a documented Blacktop build (cyriousgarageworks.com), a dealer with swap-specific conversion kits (battlegarage-rs.com), a wiring connector-set supplier (nzefi.com), an Australian AE86 forum on fuel and ignition wiring (ae86drivingclub.com.au), a cylinder-head technical site (billzilla.org) and three German legal sources (tuvsud.com, tuv.com, rallye-magazin.de). Four notes on the counting. First, the multi-part TLDs that the handover expressly names as a trap: toymods.org.au collapses to the key 'org.au' (all four toymods findings are one publisher - that is correct, but the key itself is meaningless), and ae86drivingclub.com.au to 'com.au'. No field with status VERIFIED or SUPPORTED rests on one of these keys alone; each draws in at least one second, independent publisher. Second, the host keys: the uncited referring page jakefarebrother.wordpress.com collapses to 'wordpress.com', the unreachable sportstunned.blogspot.com to 'blogspot.com', and the three YouTube links to 'youtube.com' - none of them carries a technical field. Third, club4ag.com: three findings (the two pages used plus the blocked tech-data version, HTTP 508) are one publisher; no VERIFIED field stands on club4ag alone - each has a second publisher (toymods, NZEFI, aeu86, billzilla or ae86drivingclub). Fourth, midshiprunabout.org: an MR2 guide, engine-side only (exhaust ports) and expressly used as a transfer, never vehicle-side. Twelve findings remain uncited: the three YouTube links (per § 5 not technical evidence), the unreachable referring page jakefarebrother, and the eight blocked sources. The reason for the remaining gaps can be named and does not lie with the subject matter: eight findings were blocked. The two heaviest are the SQ Engineering article on the FWD to RWD conversion (robots.txt timeout in three attempts), on which the oil pan question hangs, and the thread 'Dickes TUEV Problem mit 4age 20v black top' in toyota-forum.de (HTTP 403), on which German emissions and registration practice for exactly this combination hangs. Added to those were a second SQ page, a second toyota-forum thread, the club4ag tech-data page (508), a qrgarage login page, a toyotanation thread (402) and a sportstunned blog with an https/http redirect loop. Of the five German-language findings, three are reachable, all three legal sources - there is no readable German-language technical source on exactly this conversion in this record.
