The three 150 PS codes (AEB, AGU, AUM) run 9.5:1 compression, the 225 PS BAM 9.0:1. The AEB and the AGU are described as the earlier, sturdier generation - the AEB explicitly as an 827-series block with a forged crankshaft and the large head port, the AGU likewise large-port with a forged crankshaft - while the later AUM and BAM have the smaller head port and add VVT; the BAM in turn is quoted with a forged crankshaft again. The transverse codes share the 06A block with an internal water pump, which is the interface swap parts are built around. Buy new as swap-specific hardware: the three-piece mount set (engine mount, gearbox mount with clutch-cable counter-bracket, pendulum support), the clutch cable and clutch lever bracket, the 02J cable bracket, and - on a lowered car - the shortened oil pan with its turbo oil-return adapter. This is a solved problem with off-the-shelf hardware, and three publishers describe the same solution. The mount set consists of three pieces: an engine mount, a gearbox mount (with the counter-bracket for the clutch cable) and a pendulum support. Complete kits are sold specifically for the Mk1 - one French vendor supplies three custom mounts plus the mechanical clutch kit for the 02A and states explicitly that the original Golf 1 mounting points are used with no welding and no modification; a Canadian vendor's kit lists the passenger-side engine mount with OEM rubber bush, the rear and gearbox-side 02A/02J mounts, the 02J cable bracket, the clutch lever bracket and the gearbox mount with three modified coupling nuts. The alternative route named for those not buying a kit is grafting Mk4-platform mounts onto the Mk1 chassis legs. One dimensional detail worth knowing before ordering: the bracket on the gearbox is about 2 mm wider on the 02J than on the 02A.
The classic collision point here is not the steering rack but the road. Two independent German vendors describe the same problem in the same terms: the 1.8T sits very deep in a swapped car by virtue of its design, and on a lowered Mk1 the distance between the standard sump and the tarmac becomes marginal. Both sell a shortened 'US' oil pan as the fix - one about 2.7 cm shorter, two-piece in powder-coated steel, shaped so that on ground contact the engine tips backwards rather than smashing the pan; the other about 2.5 cm shorter at the cost of roughly 250 ml of oil volume. Both note the same secondary consequence: the turbocharger's oil return line does not line up with the shortened pan's rotated flange and must be reworked, with a CNC-machined adapter offered for it. Critically, both exclude the AEB - one on the grounds that it is the longitudinal A4/Passat engine, the other on the grounds of its intermediate-shaft-driven oil pump. The Mk1's own gearbox is not kept; the swap goes to a cable-shift VW gearbox from the later platform, and the reachable sources converge on the same family. Documented and unusually tidy for a swap of this size: Golf 1 Cabriolet driveshafts with 100 mm gearbox-side flanges are described as plug and play in this combination. The English guide states the same requirement in general form - the 02A/02J/02M/02Q gearbox needs correspondingly Mk1- or Mk2-specific driveshafts, i.e. the shafts are matched to the recipient car rather than taken from the donor. Nothing was found on shaft lengths, on joint angles at ride height, or on torque capacity behind the 225 PS BAM.
One concrete and serious failure mode is documented, and it is a differential problem rather than a ratio problem: at high power the differential bolts can migrate outward under centrifugal force and destroy the housing (1Q). That is a consequence of the standard front-wheel-drive gearbox internals being asked to handle roughly double the Mk1's original output. Transferred from a Golf Mk1 build with a different 1.8T code (AUQ): there, the intake, the intercooler AND the cooling system all had to be fabricated, i.e. in this vehicle the coolant circuit is not a carry-over but a fabrication. The transfer is plausible because the radiator question is chassis-side - packaging space in the Mk1 front end, connection positions, fan - and in that respect does not depend on the engine code. What it does NOT establish: which radiator, which fan control, which expansion tank. On the engine side it is additionally documented that the BAM brings an auxiliary water pump with it and that the transversely mounted 06A blocks have an internal water pump.
The documented approach is to adapt a series intercooler rather than to buy a bespoke one: the German conversion wiki names units from the Mercedes Sprinter, the VW T4 and the Fiat Scudo as the usual donors for the intercooler and its piping (1Q). A separate Mk1 build had its intake and intercooler fabricated to suit. Nothing reachable specified the mounting position in the Mk1's nose, the piping routing past the radiator, or pressure-drop consequences.
The reachable guidance is to build the hot side yourself: a downpipe with a flexible section and a catalytic converter, fabricated from stainless steel, in 3 inch / 76 mm (1Q). Starting position: the Golf I (Typ 17) was built from 1974 to 1983 as a hatchback and from 1979 to 1993 as a convertible, with factory outputs of 98 to 110 PS and without any turbocharged engine from the factory. All four engine codes therefore install an engine that was never type-approved in this vehicle, and roughly double the output (150 PS) or more than double it (BAM at 225 PS).
